Senators score 25 runs in doubleheader sweep of King University JV

MORRISTOWN, TN – No.1 Walters State opened up a seven-game week on Monday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of King University JV. The Senators won game one by a score of 14-4 and game two by a score of 11-3. 

 

With the sweep, the Senators moved to 37-5 on the season.

 

GAME ONE: No. 1 Walters State 14, King University JV 4

 

In game one, the Senators totalled 14 runs on 14 hits as they cruised to the win.

 

Ty Cobb (2-0) got the start on the mound and threw four innings. Cobb allowed two unearned runs on three hits while striking out five. 

 

Colby Reynolds replaced Cobb in the fifth and threw two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit. Coltin Reynolds pitched the final inning, striking out one while not allowing a hit. 

 

At the plate, Caleb Marmo picked up three hits and scored four times to lead the way for the Senators. Along with Marmo, Corbin Shaw had three hits and four RBIs while Preston Wright drove in three runs. Miles Smith and Jackson Bryan each had two hits, with one of Bryan's being a solo homer. 

 

Things started quickly for the Senators with two runs in the bottom of the first. Shaw singled in Marmo to make it 1-0 before Wright was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Jarrett Martin

 

In the second, Walters State added three more runs as Bryan smacked a solo shot, Kruise Newman hit a sacrifice fly and Pedro Pache hammered a double that scored Smith. 

 

King University cut into the lead with a run in the third and a run in the fourth, but Walters State added three in the bottom of the fourth on a Martin RBI single and a Wright two-RBI single. In the fifth, two more runs scored when Martin hit a sacrifice fly and Marmo scored on an error to make it 10-2.

 

King added two more runs in the sixth to make 10-4, but Walters State put the game away in the bottom of the sixth as Martin walked with the bases loaded to score Wright and Shaw hit a three-RBI double that made it 14-4.

 

GAME TWO: No. 1 Walters State 11, King University JV 3

 

In game two, the Senators added 10 more hits on the day as they completed the sweep.

 

At the plate, Will Cawthon had three hits and drove in two runs while Martin and Deniel Ortiz each had two hits and homered. 

 

On the mound, Cooper Morgan (3-0) got the start and threw three innings. Morgan allowed two unearned runs on one hit while striking out three.

 

In the fourth, Preston Allen replaced Morgan and threw an inning, allowing an unearned run on two hits. Johnny Stevens, Ryan Bender and Brenden Pomerleau threw the final three innings, allowing just one hit combined while striking out four. 

 

King actually jumped on the board first in the game with two runs in the top of the first. Martin cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first with a solo homer, and the Senators took the lead for good with nine runs in the second. Those runs came on a Cawthon RBI single, a hit-by-pitch of Cooper Torres that scored Kio Lugo, a Kurtis Reid two-RBI double, a Martin two-RBI double, a Cole McCallum RBI single and a two-run homer by Ortiz that made it 10-2.

 

King added one more run in the fourth before Walters State closed the scoring out with an RBI single by Cawthon in the bottom of the sixth.

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday, on the road against Patrick & Henry Community College. First pitch for the scheduled doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
