Walters State baseball sweeps doubleheader from Young Harris JV

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – Top-ranked Walters State threw a combined no-hitter in game one of a doubleheader Monday afternoon, sweeping Young Harris JV by scores of 10-1 and 17-7.

 

With the sweep, the Senators improved to 43-6 on the season.

 

GAME ONE: No.1 Walters State 10, Young Harris JV 1

 

In game one, seven pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter for Walters State in the win. 

 

Landon Slemp (6-1) got the start on the mound for the Senators and threw three innings. Slemp struck out four before Cooper Morgan replaced him in the fourth and struck out two in his inning of work. In the fifth, Colby Reynolds struck out two before Ryan Bender struck out one in the sixth. 

 

Preston Allen pitched the seventh for the Senators, allowing no hits but a run on a wild pitch. Brenden Pomerleau and Miles Smith pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to complete the no-hitter.

 

At the plate, Jarrett Martin picked up three hits and drove in two runs while Kruise Newman and Jackson Bryan each had two hits and two RBIs. 

 

The scoring started in the first for Walters State as Martin singled in Kurtis Reid, and Newman singled in Corbin Shaw and Martin to make it 3-0. Two more runs scored in the inning as Pedro Pache scored Deniel Ortiz on a sacrifice fly and Bryan singled in Newman.

 

Walters State added a run in the third on an Angus Pence RBI double and then two more in the fourth as Martin doubled home Preston Wright and Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly that scored Martin to make it 8-0.

 

In the sixth, Martin added another run as he tripled and then scored on an error. Young Harris would get on the board in the seventh, but Bryan singled home Ortiz in the eighth to make it 10-1.

 

GAME TWO: No.1 Walters State 17, Young Harris JV 7 

 

In game two, Walters State scored 11 runs in the first two innings and completed the sweep.

 

Miles Smith led the way at the plate for Walters State in game two with three hits, four RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.

 

Along with Smith, Reid added two hits and three RBIs while Martin smacked his 12th homer of the season. Wright also drove in two runs, while Will Cawthon had three hits. 

 

Jackson Hull got the start on the mound for the Senators and threw one inning. Hull gave up two runs on one hit while striking out one.

 

Coltin Reynolds replaced Hull in the second and threw two scoreless, striking out two. Following a scoreless fourth from Johnny Stevens, Bradley Gagen (2-0) struck out two in the fifth. Ty Cobb pitched the sixth and allowed a run on two hits before Taz Butler closed things out in the seventh. Butler allowed four runs but none were earned. He struck out two. 

 

Walters State once again started the scoring in the first with six runs as Reid had an RBI single, Ortiz walked with the bases loaded to score Reid, Wright singled in two runs, Pence hit a sacrifice fly and Smith singled in Keaton Ray

 

Young Harris added two runs in the bottom of the first, but Walters State scored five more times in the second. Martin started things with a solo homer before Smith singled in a run. Reid made it 10-2 with a two-RBI single and Cole McCallum closed the scoring in the inning with an RBI single. 

 

Following a two-RBI single from Martin in the fourth that made it 13-2, the Senators scored two more in the fifth as Smith singled in Ray and Cawthon scored on a wild pitch.

 

Young Harris scored once in the sixth, but the Senators got an RBI double from Pence and a sacrifice fly from Smith to make it 17-3 in the seventh. Young Harris scored four in the bottom of the seventh, but the Senators closed things out.

Walters State will be back in action on Friday as they travel to take on Dyersburg State. Friday's 9-inning game is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
