Third-ranked Senators baseball close out Dyersburg State series with win

DYERSBURG, TN – No. 3 Walters State scored four runs in the eighth inning on Monday afternoon against Dyersburg State, capping the series off with a 4-3 win.

With the win, Walters State improved to 44-8 on the season and 18-5 in TCCAA play.

Things looked dim for Walters State as they trailed 2-0 heading to the eighth inning. However, the Senators rallied. Cole McCallum led off the inning with a single and after Corbin Shaw singled and Deniel Ortiz was hit-by-pitch, the bases were loaded.

Following a strikeout, Kruise Newman stepped to the plate and tied the game with a two-RBI single. Dyersburg got a force out at second the next batter, but Keaton Ray pinch-hit and mashed a two-RBI double in the gap in right-center to give the Senators a 4-2 lead.

Newman led the way at the plate for Walters State with two hits and two RBIs. Caleb Marmo also had two hits.

On the mound, Brayden Matthews got the start and threw 4.1 innings. Matthews allowed two runs on four hits and struck out 10.

With an out in the fifth, Karson Bonaparte (5-0) replaced Matthews and threw the remainder of the game. Bonaparte allowed a solo homer with two outs in the ninth but that was all, striking out seven in the process to collect the win.
