Senators season ends in Region 7/TCCAA Baseball Championship

GALLATIN, TN – No. 1 Walters State saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in the Region 7/TCCAA Championship, falling to No. 19 Chattanooga State by a score of 9-6.

With the loss, Walters State's season ends with a record of 51-10. They were the TCCAA regular season champions.

The Senators totaled seven hits in Saturday's game. Kruise Newman led the way with two hits, one being a three-run bomb. Kurtis Reid also had two hits, while Keaton Ray hit a home run and drove in three runs.

On the mound, Brayden Matthews (6-2) got the start and threw 2.1 innings. Matthews gave up four runs on four hits. Matthews was replaced by Taz Butler in the third with one out, and Butler threw 2.2 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three.

In the sixth, Jackson Hull entered in relief and threw 1.1 innings before handing the ball to Karson Bonaparte. Bonaparte pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit while striking out two.

Things started off strong for Walters State in the game as they loaded the bases for Ray with one out in the bottom of the first. Ray came through with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Senators a 1-0 lead.

However, Chattanooga came back strong and scored the next six runs to take a 6-1 lead. Needing a spark in the bottom of the fifth, Newman delivered with a three-run bomb to right that made it 6-4.

The Tigers picked up a run in the seventh to make it 7-4, but Ray cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer.

In the eighth, Chattanooga State added two more runs to make it 9-6, but Walters State threatened with two outs in the bottom half and the bases loaded for Newman. Unfortunately, the second pitch of the at-bat went to the backstop but took a perfect bounce back to the catcher who flipped the ball to the pitcher for the tag on the runner sprinting home to end the inning.

The Senators went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game.
