Walters State opens season with win over Milligan College JV

ELIZABETHTON, TN – Javontay Rollings scored 16 straight points for Walters State in the second half of their season opener on Monday evening as the Senators rolled to a 99-63 win over Milligan College JV. 

 

With the win, Walters State improves to 1-0 to begin the season.

 

The Senators were led by Rollings who scored 16 points on 8-10 shooting. Walters State out-scored Milligan College JV 51-28 in the second half. 

 

Along with Rollings, De'Marius Boyd and Ty Hurst each had 15 points while Destin Barker recorded a double-double with 12 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, and 10 rebounds. Jared Carter also scored in double figures with 10 points. 

 

It was a slow start for Walters State who scored four points in the first two minutes of the game. However, Boyd and Barker got things going with seven straight points to make it 9-5. Ronnie Thompson then hit a 3-pointer and it was 12-5. 

 

Milligan would mount a comeback and make it 18-16 before Carter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it an eight-point game. Then, up 28-21, the Senators broke away.

 

The run started on a Hurst jumper and Josh Jerome dunk. Milligan answered with a 3-pointer, but Hurst was there again to push the lead to 10 with a jumper. The run finished when Boyd dunked one home and made a jump shot to make it 38-24. 

 

Walters State led at the half 48-35.

 

In the second half, the Senators kept on pushing. With the lead at 12, Hurst scored five quick points to make it 59-42. 

 

Up 66-46, Rollings took over and scored the next 16 points for the Senators. The last two points came on a dunk that made it 82-52. From there, the Senators cruised in the last four minutes for the win. Kawika Makua hit two 3-pointers and Carter hit a jumper to finish the scoring. 

 

In total, 13 Senators scored points on Monday evening.

Walters State will have their home opener on Friday afternoon in the Senators Tip Off Classic against Cape Fear at 4 p.m. The Senators will close out the Classic on Saturday, hosting Caldwell Community College at 5 p.m.
