MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State was out-scored 50-38 in the second half on Saturday evening against Caldwell Community College, ultimately falling 89-73 in the Senators Tip Off Classic Finale. 

With the loss, Walters State falls to 2-1 on the season. 

"We just got out-played," Walters State coach Bill Carlyle said. "We missed Josh (Jerome) today on the boards. We didn't compete well. I was dismayed at how we handled things. We have to be a lot better than that." 

De'Marius Boyd led the way for Walters State for the second straight game with 21 points on 7-15 shooting. Ty Hurst, Izaiha Bredwood and Isaiah Farrior all added eight points apiece as well. Destin Barker led the team with nine rebounds.

As a team, the Senators shot 42% from the field and 35% from 3-point range. For Caldwell, they shot 47% from the field and made 10 3-pointers. 

It was a back-and-forth affair to start the game as Ronnie Thompson got things going with a 3-pointer to put Walters State out in front. The two teams traded buckets from there until Hurst scored four straight that put Walters State up 10-8.

The lead grew to four seconds later when Boyd made a jumper, but Caldwell took control after that. The Senators would cut the Caldwell lead to one at times but could never get the lead back. Walters State went into the half with a little momentum though when Bredwood nailed a shot at the buzzer to make it 39-35 at the half. 

In the second half, it was Caldwell who came out scorching hot as they quickly extended their lead to 20 just six minutes in. The two teams went through the motions the rest of the way as Caldwell eased to the victory.

In the second half, Boyd had 15 points while Farrior had six.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as conference play gets under way, hosting Chattanooga State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
