Senators can’t overcome slow start, fall to No. 17 Columbia State

COLUMBIA, TN – Walters State scored just one point in the first 10 minutes against No.17 Columbia State on Saturday and could never recover, falling 76-45.

 

With the loss, Walters State falls to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in TCCAA play.

 

The Senators were led by De'Marius Boyd with 18 points. Josh Jerome had six points while Destin Barker led the team with five rebounds. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 34.6% from the field. Columbia State shot 45% and collected 44 rebounds. Jamari Bostic led the way for the Chargers with 19 points. 

 

The Senators could not get anything going to start on Saturday as they were down 16-1, the one coming off a Barker free throw, with 10:45 left in the first. Boyd finally made their first field goal with 9:51 left. 

 

From there, the Senators tried to work their way back in it as Isaiah Farrior scored five straight to make it 19-8. However, Columbia got the momentum back and led 32-17 at the half. 

 

In the second half, it was more of the same as the Senators could not get into a rhythm. Boyd had 13 in the half on 5-11 shooting while Ty Hurst scored five. 

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Motlow State on the road. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. as the Senators look to get back on track.
