Carter hits seven 3-pointers in rout of Tennessee Wesleyan JV

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State showed zero signs of slowing down coming off Thanksgiving break on Monday evening as they put up a season high in points in a 128-57 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan JV.

With the win, Walters State improves to 7-3 on the season and have won three in-a-row.

It was a new face that led the way for Walters State in the game as Jared Carter came off the bench and hit seven 3-pointers. He finished with 21 points.

"We had some good moments and have some kids working their tails off," Walters State coach Bill Carlyle said. "I thought Jared (Carter) played very well tonight. He continues to improve."

Along with Carter, Isaiah Farrior had 17 points off the bench and five rebounds while Josh Jerome had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Other scorers in the game included Ty Hurst with 15, Javontay Rollings with 14, Ijesuoefe Iyamu with 12, Izaiha Bredwood with 10, Ronnie Thompson Jr. with eight, Dowar Jioklow with seven, Brandon Kabuya Mpoyi with four and Kawika Makua and Turner Bailey each with two.

As a team, Walters State was 53-89 (59.6%) from the field and had 47 rebounds and 34 assists.

"I thought our three guards played well," Carlyle said. "We had a lot of guys score points. Now, we just need to continue to work on our defense."

Unlike the last two contests for the Senators, Walters State came out with a purpose to start the game and never let Wesleyan hang around. The Senators led 27-9 midway through the half and poured it on from there as they led 54-22 at the break.

In the first half, Carter hit three 3-pointers while Farrior had eight and Rollings and Jerome had six each.

The second half was more of the same as Carlyle was able to get his bench players some valuable minutes. Carter hit four more 3-pointers in the second half while Farrior had eight, Hurst 11 and Jerome 10.

The Senators shot 66.7% in the second half and hit 10 3-pointers.

"We scored a lot of points tonight but just need to be better on defense," Carlyle said. "We're just going to keep improving as we have been."

UP NEXT:

Walters State has two big conference matchups this week as they look to climb back into the conference race.

On Wednesday, the Senators travel to take on Cleveland State at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars are currently 2-1 in the conference.

Then on Saturday, Walters State is back at home to take on Volunteer State at 4 p.m. Vol State is currently 1-2 in the conference.

With two wins, the Senators would stand at 4-2 and put pressure on the top teams.

"We need these two this week," Carlyle said. "We need to close the gap in the conference a little. We just need to keep working on our defense as we head into these games."
