Multiple Senators shine in victory over Tusculum JV

MORRISTOWN,TN – Walters State's Brandon Kabuya Mpoyi was a perfect 9-9 from the field on Monday evening against Tusculum JV as the Senators cruised to a 107-65 victory.

With the win, the Senators are 9-4 on the season and have won five of their last six contests.

Mpoyi led the way for the Senators with 20 points off the bench, scoring 16 of them in the second half. Mpoyi also had 11 rebounds, recording his first double-double of the season.

Along with Mpoyi, Dowar Jioklow had 18 points off the bench while Jared Carter had 12 and Ronnie Thompson Jr. 10 points.

Other scorers in the game included Ty Hurst with 15, Josh Jerome with eight, Izaiha Bredwood with five, Isaiah Farrior with two, Riley Cooper with seven, Ijesuoefe Iyamu and Javontay Rollings with two and Kawika Makua with six.

"It's nice to get everybody a chance to play," Walters State coach Bill Carlyle said. "I saw some things out of people tonight that I really liked. I thought Dowar had his best game, and I thought Brandon played really well. That was nice to see. They played very well. It's always nice to get our second team in because you never know when you're going to need them, so they need to be ready."

As a team, Walters State shot 61% (47-77) from the field and had 43 rebounds. Jioklow had eight rebounds to go along with Mpoyi's 11.

Unlike last time the two met when it was close for a half, Walters state got off and running early in the contest. Hurst scored five of the first seven points of the game with Farrior scoring the other two and it was 7-0.

Midway through the first, the lead was 16-12 before the Senators really began pulling away. Jioklow scored four and Rollings and Mpoyi each scored to get the lead to double digits.

The Senators would end the half strong and lead 46-32.

In the second half, it was all Walters State from the beginning as the Senators scored the first seven points of the half again, this time with Cooper and Hurst making shots and Bredwood draining a 3-pointer.

Carter got in on the fun in the second half for the Senators, scoring all 12 points during that span before Jioklow and Mpoyi took over down the stretch. Makua also came through down the stretch, scoring six points in the final five minutes.

Up Next:

Walters State will take a day off before returning to practice in preparation for a huge weekend ahead.

First, the Senators will take on Caldwell Community College at Caldwell at 6 p.m. on Friday. Caldwell took down the Senators earlier in the year with an 89-73 win.

Then, on Saturday the Senators will take on Davidson-Davie Community College at Caldwell at 4 p.m. Davidson-Davie is ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA DII men's basketball rankings.

"We're going to take a day and then try and get through with these finals before we head to North Carolina for some real tough ones," Carlyle said. "That will be big time down there, both teams can really play."
