Senators can’t sustain start, fall to Caldwell Community College

HUDSON, NC – Walters State started strong against host Caldwell Community College on Friday evening but could not sustain it, falling to the Cobras 89-65.

 

With the loss, Walters State falls to 9-5 on the season. It's their second loss of the season to Caldwell.

 

The Senators were led in the game by Josh Jerome with 23 points on 9-17 shooting. Jerome had seven rebounds as well. 

 

Along with Jerome, Isaiah Farrior had 11 points while Ronnie Thompson Jr. added nine. Other scorers included Ty Hurst with six, Riley Cooper with two, Javontay Rollings with two, Dowar Jioklow with four, Kawika Makua with four and Turner Bailey with two. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 24-54 (44.4%) from the field and had 27 rebounds. 

 

Caldwell got off to a strong start to begin the game on Friday, taking a 7-3 lead. However, the Senators responded to tie the game as Jerome and Farrior both scored. 

 

Thompson then gave the Senators the lead with five straight points. Farrior then made it 14-10 with a jumper. Caldwell tied the game at 16 before Jerome hit a 3-pointer for Walters State and then scored again. 

 

Caldwell would take a 22-21 lead, but the Senators pushed again as Rollings scored and Hurst hit a 3-pointer to make it 26-22. 

 

Unfortunately for the Senators, that would be the last time they led as Caldwell fired back and led 44-35 at the break. 

 

In the second half, it was more of the same as the Cobras outscored Walters State 45-30 on their way to the win. In the second half, Jerome had 13 points while Makua added four.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Davidson-Davie Community College, ranked No.7 in NJCAA DII. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
