DYERSBURG, TN – Walters State fell behind late in the first half and could never catch back up, falling to Dyersburg State on Saturday afternoon, 73-63.
With the loss, Walters State falls to 13-11 on the season and 5-8 in TCCAA play.
The Senators were led in the game by Deovaunta Williams with 13 points. Riley Cooper added 11 points as well for Walters State.
Other scorers in the game for the Senators were Josh Jerome and Destin Barker each with eight, Brandon Kabuya with seven, Ty Hurst and Javontay Rollings each with five, Kawika Makua with four and Jared Carter with two.
The Senators made 17 2-pointers, six 3-pointers and were 11/16 from the free throw line.
Walters State got down early in the contest but managed to cut into the lead thanks to Cooper's nine points in the half and Williams' eight. The Senators cut a double-digit lead to 25-21 and had multiple chances to cut the lead even further.
However, Dyersburg State answered back and controlled the final minutes of the half, leading 40-28.
In the second half, Dyersburg continued to hold a lead but it was far from comfortable. With six minutes to go, Walters State had the lead down to 57-53 when Jerome hit a 3-pointer. However, that was as close as the Senators would get as Dyersburg closed strong for the 10-point victory.
