Senators get huge win, take down Southwest Tennessee at home

MORRISTOWN,TN – Walters State needed a win in a bad way following a week off on Saturday afternoon, and the Senators answered the call.

 

Playing Southwest Tennessee, Walters State came out firing in the second half, outscoring Southwest by seven on their way to a 67-60 victory. 

 

With the win, Walters State improves to 16-12 on the season and 7-9 in conference play. Walters State has now won two straight conference games.

 

"We spent a week working on defense, and it looks like it has paid off," Walters State coach Bill Carlyle said. "We made too many mistakes at the end, but we did a nice job tonight of playing hard. They are one of the better teams in the league. They have good talent and are well-coached. I'm just happy to get out of here with a w." 

 

Walters State was led in the game by a big showing from Josh Jerome. Jerome had 17 points in the contest.

 

Along with Jerome, Destin Barker and Ty Hurst each scored 11 apiece. Other scorers in the game were Deovaunta Williams with eight points, Izaiha Bredwood with six, Jared Carter and Riley Cooper each with five and Dowar Jioklow with four. 

 

The Senators held firm in the first half as they battled toe-to-toe with Southwest. Jerome had eight points in the half while Bredwood came off the bench with six big points. Jioklow ignited the crowd with a huge dunk while Barker had four and Carter had five. The two teams were deadlocked at 27 at the break.

 

In the second half, Walters State came out gunning, building a 10-point lead. Southwest fought back, but the Senators got the momentum back and built their lead all the way to 17 at one point. While Southwest made a run late, the Senators held on for the win.

 

In the second half, the Senators were led by Hurst with all 11 of his points. Jerome had nine as well while Williams scored all eight of his points. Cooper made a big bucket down the stretch to stop a late Southwest run.

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel for their final road game of the season against Roane State. The Senators defeated Roane State 73-58 in the two teams' first meeting this season.
