Senators fall in Region VII Tournament Quarterfinals to Southwest Tennessee

DYERSBURG, TN – Walters State struggled from the field against Southwest Tennessee on Saturday afternoon in the Region VII Basketball Quarterfinals, falling 59-52.

 

The loss concludes the season for the Senators who finished the year 17-14.

 

Walters State shot just 34% (18-53) from the field and were 4-18 from the 3-point line. 

 

The Senators were led in the game by Deovaunta Williams. Williams ended his Walters State career with 11 points, two steals, three rebounds and two assists. 

 

Along with Williams, Josh Jerome added 10 points and nine rebounds. Other scorers were Jared Carter with eight, Riley Cooper with seven, Ty Hurst with six, Destin Barker with five and eight rebounds, Izaiha Bredwood with three Brandon Kabuya with two. 

 

Decorio Smith led the way for Southwest with 21 points.

 

Walters State, as a team, out-rebounded Southwest 42-39 and had 11 offensive boards. Kabuya led the Senators with 11 boards. 

 

The Senators and Saluqis battled back-and-forth in the first half as Southwest entered the locker room with a 30-27 lead. In the second half, there was never much separation as Walters State could not get past Southwest, falling to end their season.

 

After the game, Williams and Jerome were honored as members of the 2022 All-TCCAA Basketball Teams. Jerome was named to the first team while Williams, who only started playing in January, still managed to earn second team honors.
