Walters State ends 2022 with win over Milligan College JV

BRISTOL, TN – Walters State ended play in 2022 on Friday evening with a 91-47 win over Milligan College JV.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 8-6 on the season.

 

Michael Houge led the charge for Walters State with 18 points on 8-10 shooting. Houge added seven rebounds and three assists. 

 

Along with Houge, Malachi Hale came off the bench and had 16 points and six rebounds. Hale was 8-13 from the field. 

 

Ty Hurst was also effective in the game with 15 points, four assists and four rebounds. Other scorers for the Senators were Jair Horton with 13 points,  Micah Simpson with 11 points, Daveonne Warfield with five points, Jaylen Wharton with four points, Wade Pelfrey with three points and Izaiha Bredwood, Ijesuoefe Iyamu and Destin Barker with two each. 

 

The Senators shot 50% from the field and had 47 rebounds and 22 assists. On the defensive end, Walters State held Milligan to 30% from the field and forced 20 turnovers. 

 

Milligan jumped out to a 3-2 lead to start the game but a Houge free throw tied the game and a Hurst jump shot gave them the lead. The lead grew to six thanks to three straight from Houge before Hale and Bredwood traded buckets. 

 

Milligan would make a run and cut it to one at 18-17, but Hale stopped the bleeding with a basket. Milligan answered with a three to tie the game and layup to take the lead, but Simpson drilled a 3-pointer to make it 23-22 in favor of Walters State. 

 

The Senators went on a 14-0 run from there that put the game away as Simpson had six points, including a dunk. The lead was 39-27 at the half after Hurst made a layup at the buzzer.

 

In the second half, the lead would only grow as a Houge dunk and Horton layup made it a 21-point game at 56-35. Walters State would go on to outscore Milligan 52-20 in the second half on their way to the big win. 

 

Houge had 12 points in the second half while Horton had 11 and Hale 10. Hurst also had nine points.

Walters State will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 5, as they host Experience Academy. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
