Walters State picks up road win over Southwest Tennessee

MEMPHIS, TN – Michael Houge recorded his 12th straight double-double on Saturday afternoon as Walters State picked up conference win number 10 with a 71-63 victory over Southwest Tennessee. 

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 18-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play.

 

Houge led the way for the Senators with 28 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 9-15 from the field and 10-13 from the free throw line. 

 

Along with Houge, Elijah Davis scored 14 points and dished out six assists while Micah Simpson had 10 points. Other contributors for Walters State were Jaylen Wharton with seven points, Ty Hurst with four points and three assists, Destin Barker with four points and four rebounds and Malachi Hale with four points. 

 

As a team, the Senators shot 44% from the field and 81% from the charity stripe. The Senators collected 26 rebounds and dished out 14 assists. 

 

It was a close affair to start as Southwest actually led at the half, 38-34. However, the Senators defense woke up in the second half and held Southwest to 25 points, scoring 37 of their own to secure the victory.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Chattanooga State. Chattanooga State currently sits in first place in the conference at 12-3 with the Senators one game out in the loss column at 10-4.
