Senators win NJCAA DII Southeast District and Region 7 Tournament

BRISTOL, TN – For the 24th time in school history, the Walters State golf team is heading to the national tournament.  

 

On Tuesday, playing just nine holes due to rainy conditions, the Senators overcame a four-shot deficit to take home the NJCAA DII Southeast District and Region 7 Tournament by seven shots. Walters State shot a 144 in the shortened third round and ended with a 725 team score for the tournament. 

 

ABAC finished in second place with a team score of 732 while Cleveland State came in third with a score of 733. All three teams qualified for the NJCAA DII National Tournament. 

 

The Senators were led in the tournament by Sawyer Spoone. After a one-under on Monday, Spoone shot a two-over, 38, in round three to finish as the medalist for Region 7 and runner-up in the Southeast Tournament. Spoone was also named to the All-Southeast District team. 

 

Along with Spoone, Jeremy Ellis also finished as a member of the All-Southeast District team with a fourth-place finish in the tournament. Ellis shot an even-par, 36, in round three to finish at two-over for the tournament. 

 

Rounding out the team for Walters State was Nate Vaughan (T-11), Hunter Hartman (13) and AJ Rinehart (T-14). 

 

Hartman was the low man for the Senators on Tuesday with a two-under, 34. Hartman birdied holes one and six and finished with a seven-over score for the tournament. 

 

Vaughan finished the tournament with a 38 on Tuesday, finishing at five-over for the tournament, while Rinehart shot a 36 to finish at 10-over for the tournament.

 

ABAC's Hagen Marion won the tournament with a one-under score.
