Walters State holds Southwest Virginia scoreless in doubleheader sweep

Walters State holds Southwest Virginia scoreless in doubleheader sweep

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State outscored Southwest Virginia 21-0 in two games on Wednesday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader.

The Lady Senators won game one 9-0 in five innings and game two 12-0 in five innings. With the sweep, the Lady Senators move to 4-0 on the season.

"We're just trying to get started and let everyone play and get a feel for things," Walters State coach Larry Sauceman said. "We let the pitchers throw that hadn't thrown either. This weekend is going to be tough with the teams we're playing, but it will be good."

On Saturday in their season openers, the Lady Senators hit seven home runs. Wednesday was a different story with just one home run, however, Walters State still found plenty of ways to plate runs.

"This team has the potential to hit a lot of home runs," Sauceman said. "But I am happy for them to score runs in different ways. I am hoping we can continue that this weekend."

Game One: Walters State 9, Southwest Virginia 0 (5 innings)

In game one, Walters State compiled 12 hits to go along with their nine runs and cruised to the victory.

Jessica Odom, Brianna Beech, Maggie Johnson and Kaitlyn Harper each had two hits in the game. Johnson and Jessica Campbell both knocked in two runs each while Campbell, Odom and Halle Laramie each had a stolen base.

Ashley Milligan got the start in the circle for the Lady Senators and picked up her first win of the season, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out two. Allison Chandler replaced her in the fifth and threw a scoreless inning, allowing one hit.

The scoring started early for the Lady Senators with three runs in the first. Tatum Dye got the Lady Senators on the board first with a double to right that scored Campbell. Kasey Bennett, the next batter, then made it 2-0 with an RBI single while a Beech double that scored Laramie put it at 3-0 after one.

Three more runs came across in the second for Walters State as Campbell once again was a factor. Campbell knocked in two runs with a double, scoring Johnson and Harper, and then scored on an error by the catcher.

The scoring concluded in the third for the Lady Senators as Ashlyn Gaines singled in Odom and a Johnson double scored Beech and Gaines.

Game Two: Walters State 12, Southwest Virginia 0 (5 innings)

Game two was more of the same for Walters State as they tallied 13 hits this time around.

Campbell and Beech were the stars of game two as Campbell led the team with three hits while Beech knocked in five runs. She has seven RBIs through four games.

Ava Brooks hit the lone home run of the day in game two as she knocked in two runs while Demi Garner also knocked in two runs. Odom had two hits once again and Campbell and Johnson both stole bases.

In the circle for game two, Abigayle Holt made her season debut as she threw four innings and picked up her first win. Holt allowed no runs on three hits and struck out one.

Chandler once again pitched the final inning, throwing a scoreless fifth to finish the game off.

"They did what they had to do," Sauceman said. "I am pleased with what I have seen so far. Hopefully our pitching just keeps improving as the season goes on because I think our hitting and defense will be alright."

Just like in game one, Walters State opened up the scoring in the first with three runs. Laramie scored the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly that drove home Campbell, and Beech made it 3-0 with a single that knocked in Laramie and Brooks.

Five more runs scored for the Lady Senators in the second as they kept the pressure on at the plate. Following a bases loaded walk that scored Grayson Phipps, Beech cleaned the bases with a 3-RBI double. Beech would come home to score the final run of the inning on an Olivia Harris fielders choice.

Brooks finally got the Lady Senators first home run of the day in the third inning as she cranked a two-run home run over the fence in left field. The scoring concluded when Garner singled off the wall, scoring Bennett and Sam Chavez
