Walters State stays undefeated with sweep of Central Alabama, Shelton State

GULF SHORES, AL – Walters State kept their strong start to the season going on Friday morning, sweeping Central Alabama and Shelton State.

 

In game one, the Lady Senators shutout Central Alabama with a 6-0 victory. Game two saw Walters State come out on top over Shelton State, 6-2.

 

With the sweep, Walters State moves to 6-0 on the season. 

 

Game One: Walters State 6, Central Alabama 0

 

Walters State got a 2-run home run from Kasey Bennett in the first inning of game one and were off and running on their way to the victory.

 

Bennett and Ashlyn Gaines led the team at the plate. Bennett hit the 2-run home run while Gaines had two hits and knocked in three runs. Tatum Dye knocked in the other run for the Lady Senators while Maggie Johnson also had two hits.

 

Stolen bases came from Jessica Campbell, Johnson and two from Dye. 

 

In the circle, Adrienne Morrison got the start and went the distance, throwing a complete game. Morrison gave up no runs on three hits and struck out six. 

 

Following Bennett's home run in the first, the Lady Senators kept Central Alabama at bay and added to their lead in the fourth when Gaines singled in Johnson to make it 3-0.

 

In the sixth, Walters State scored three more times to put the game out of reach. Gaines scored the first two runs when she singled in Johnson and Sarah King. Dye capped the scoring off when she singled home Gaines. 

 

Game Two: Walters State 6, Shelton State 2

 

In game two, Johnson broke a 2-0 game open for Walters State when she cleared the bases with two outs in the fifth.

 

Along with Johnson's three RBIs, Brianna Beech drove home two runs while Halle Laramie knocked one run in. Laramie, Gaines and Jessica Odom each had two hits in the game. Dye stole her third base of the day in the game. 

 

Ashley Miligan got the start in the circle for Walters State and threw 6.1 innings. Milligan gave up two runs on four hits and struck out 11 while walking six. Abigayle Holt got the final two outs of the game to secure the win. 

 

Following a scoreless inning, Beech put the first run on the board in the top of the second when she singled to center to score Odom.

 

The Lady Senators would add another run in the fourth when Laramie scored Odom. Johnson broke the game open in the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs, doubling in Gaines, Campbell and Dye. 

 

One last run would score in the seventh when Beech scored Bennett on a sacrifice fly.

Walters State concludes their time in Gulf Shores, AL on Saturday morning, taking on East Central at 10 a.m. and No. 7 Wallace State-Hanceville at 12:15 p.m.
