Lady Senators close out weekend with Saturday split

BOAZ, AL – Walters State closed out their weekend on a high-note Saturday afternoon, taking down Blinn College 8-4.

The Lady Senators lost game one of the day to Gulf Coast State College, 7-5. With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 8-4 on the season.

Game One: Gulf Coast State 7, Walters State 5

In game one of the day, the Lady Senators matched Gulf Coast run-for-run through the first four innings until a two-run fifth inning and two-run sixth inning by Gulf Coast gave them the victory.

Jessica Campbell, Kasey Bennett and Brianna Beech all led the way for the Lady Senators in game one with three hits each. Bennett knocked in two runs while Beech drove home one. Ashlyn Gaines had two RBIs as well.

In the circle, Abigayle Holt got the start and threw five innings. Holt gave up six runs, only three earned, on five hits. She struck out two.

Adrienne Morrison replaced her in the sixth and gave up an unearned run.

It was the Lady Senators who started things off in game one as Bennett singled in Campbell in the top of the first to put them out in front, 1-0.

Gulf Coast responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, but Walters State scored two more in the top of the second. After Kaitlyn Harper and Tessa Brooks both reached base, Gaines drove them home with a 2-RBI triple that tied the game at three.

The score remained deadlocked at three until the top of the fifth when Bennett gave the Lady Senators the lead, blasting a home run to left field.

Unfortunately, for the Lady Senators, the lead wouldn't last long as Gulf Coast scored four unanswered to take the win.

Game Two: Walter State 8, Blinn College 4

Not letting game one get to them, Walters State scored four runs in the first two innings of game two and three in the sixth as they powered to the victory.

Beech concluded her phenomenal weekend with three hits in game two, including a 2-run home run. She knocked in three runs in the game.

Along with Beech, Campbell, Jessica Odom, Brooks and Sarah King each had two hits in the game. Campbell knocked in two runs while King drove home one.

In the circle, Morrison got the start. Morrison threw 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits. She struck out four.

Allison Chandler replaced Morrison with one out in the fifth, pitching the remainder of the game. Chandler allowed one run on two hits and struck out one.

After Blinn opened up the game in the top of the first with a run, Walters State immediately answered back with two in the bottom half as Beech blasted a 2-run home run over the fence in center.

In the second, the Lady Senators added to their lead as Campbell singled to score King and Beech singled home Gaines. That made it 4-1 through two.

In the fifth, Blinn cut the lead to 4-3 before Walters State answered with a run of their own in the bottom half as Campbell singled in Brooks.

Blinn scored one more time in the top of the sixth to make it 5-4 before the Lady Senators exploded in the bottom half of the inning. First, Maggie Johnson scored Beech and Odom on an error by the third baseman. Johnson scored the final run of the game when King singled her home.
