Campbell powers Walters State to sweep of Motlow State

Campbell powers Walters State to sweep of Motlow State

MORRISTOWN, TN – You'd be hard pressed to find someone who has had a better weekend than Walters State's Jessica Campbell.

The Lady Senators center fielder and leadoff hitter had been unstoppable against Motlow State on Friday and showed no signs of slowing down on Saturday afternoon.

After going 7-8 at the plate on Friday, Campbell went 3-4 on Saturday, blasting two home runs and walking three times as the Lady Senators defeated Motlow State 5-4 and 12-0.

With the sweep, Walters State moved to 12-4 on the season and 4-0 in TCCAA play.

For the weekend, Campbell was 10-12 at the plate with three home runs, nine RBIs and three walks.

"Campbell, I don't know what she finished with, but she was on the bases everytime I looked up this weekend," Walters State coach Larry Sauceman said. "She had three home runs at the leadoff spot.  She's going to do that this season, she's got some pop."

As a team, it could not have been a better start to conference play for Walters State. They will now look to build off the momentum into the next coming weekends.

"We struggled in the first game today and almost got beat, but we turned it on in the second game," Saucemand said. "We're just always working to get better."

Game One: Walters State 5, Motlow State 4

In game one, the Lady Senators scored four runs in the first two innings and held on for a late win over the Lady Bucks.

Adrienne Morrison got the start in the circle and lasted three innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two.

Allison Chandler replaced her in the fourth and pitched the remainder of the game, working out of trouble as she gave up just one run on six hits.

At the plate, Brianna Beech led the way with three hits while Campbell knocked in three runs and hit her second home run in as many days.

Motlow got on the scoreboard first in game one with a run in the top of the first, but the Lady Senators immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the first. The run came courtesy of Beech as she hit a line drive to left that scored Campbell.

In the bottom of the second, Walters State scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Walters State took the lead on one swing of the bat as Campbell hit a three-run homer.

Motlow added two in the top of the third and then both teams went silent until Walters State went up 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Halle Laramie, pinch hitting, drilled a ball off the fence to score Beech.

The Lady Bucks scored one more in the top of the sixth with a solo home run, but Chandler shut the door from there to get the victory.

Game Two: Walters State 12, Motlow State 0 (5 Innings)

In game two, the Lady Senators used a good outing in the circle from Abigayle Holt and an offensive explosion to end the game early.

Holt threw a complete game in the circle, striking out four while allowing just two hits.

"Holt was really good," Sauceman said. "She got some people out. She did a good job."

The Lady Senators totaled 12 hits in the game as Kasey Bennett had three of them and Campbell and Grayson Phipps two each. Campbell and Tatum Dye each knocked in three runs while Bennett, Ava Brooks and Phipps drove in two runs apiece.

After a scoreless top half of the inning, Walters State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom half of the first when Bennett blasted a moonshot over the fence to make it 2-0.

The Lady Senators kept it up in the second with four more runs. First, Brooks scored Jessica Odom on an RBI groundout. After a passed ball made it 4-0, Dye made it 6-0 with a two-run home run.

Any chance of a comeback from Motlow was put to rest in the third as Walters State tallied five more runs. Brooks, once again, knocked in the first run of the inning with an RBI single. She was followed closely behind by Phipps with an RBI single. Campbell soon made it 11-0 as she blasted her third home run of the weekend over the fence, a three-run shot.

The Lady Senators added one more in the fourth as Phipps drove home a run on a line drive to right.
