Walters State run-rules Jackson State twice to complete sweep

Jackson, TN – Walters State got the offense going early and often on Saturday afternoon as they easily swept Jackson State, 10-0 in five innings and 11-1 in six innings. 

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 16-6 overall and 6-2 in TCCAA play. 

 

Game One: Walters State 10, Jackson State 0 (5 Innings) 

 

Walters State scored five runs in the third inning in game one to break a scoreless tie as they went on for the five inning victory.

 

Ashley Milligan got the start for Walters State in the circle and threw a complete game shutout, striking out four while allowing just three hits. 

 

At the plate, Jessica Campbell had three hits while Kasey Bennett had two hits and three RBIs. Halle Laramie and Brianna Beech each hit home runs. 

 

After two scoreless innings to start, Walters State broke the game open in the third. Tatum Dye got things started with an RBI single before Bennett scored her to make it 2-0. It was soon 4-0 as Laramie hit her first home run of the day, a two-run shot. The final run of the inning came courtesy of Ava Brooks who scored Jessica Odom with a ball off the wall. 

 

Walters State added two more in the fourth as Bennett doubled, scoring Kaitlyn Harper and Campbell. In the sixth, Beech hit a two-run homer to make it 9-0 before Sarah King scored the 10th run on a wild pitch. 

 

Game Two: Walters State 11, Jackson State 1 (6 Innings) 

 

In game two, the Lady Senators defense kept the pace going with 11 more runs on 17 hits.

 

Allison Chandler got the start in the circle in game two and, like Milligan, threw a complete game while allowing an unearned run on seven hits. She struck out four.

 

At the plate, Laramie was at it again with three more hits and her second home run of the day. Campbell was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, going 7-for-8 on the day, while King also had three hits. 

 

After Campbell beat out a bunt to open up the game, Laramie blasted her second two-run homer of the day to make it 2-0 early. Jackson State responded with a run in the bottom of the first before King scored on a sacrifice fly and Grayson Phipps scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 in the top of the second. 

 

Following a scoreless third, the Lady Senators scraped one run across in the fourth as Dye tripled home Campbell. The Lady Senators finished the game off with three runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

 

In the fifth, Beech started the scoring by singling in Laramie. Maggie Johnson added another run by singling to score Beech before Campbell singled home King. In the sixth, Laramie singled in Bennett, King scored Laramie and Olivia Harris singled in Beech.

Walters State will be back in action on Sunday for two more games against Jackson State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
