Lady Senators combine for 31 runs to complete sweep of Jackson State

JACKSON, TN – Walters State scored 20 runs in game one against Jackson State on Sunday afternoon and followed it up with 11 more runs in game two on their way to a 20-1 and 11-5 sweep.

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improve to 18-6 overall and 8-2 in TCCAA play. It was the second four-game sweep Walters State has had in conference play this season.

Game One: Walters State 20, Jackson State 1 (5 innings)

Walters State scored nine runs in the first inning of game one on Sunday and were off and running for one of their more impressive offensive showings so far this season.

The scoring started as Sarah King bunted for a hit and moved to second on an error. The error scored Jessica Campbell, who reached to start the game with a bunt single. Halle Laramie was the next batter, and she made it 3-0 with a two-run home run. It was her third straight game with a home run.

Following the home run, the Lady Senators loaded the bases with one out before Ava Brooks singled in Kasey Bennett and Grayson Phipps singled home Brianna Beech. With the bases still loaded, Campbell made it 8-0, clearing the bases with a hit off the wall. King drove home the final run of the inning, singling in Campbell to make it 9-0.

Walters State added four more runs in the top of the second to take a 13-0 lead. Brooks got the scoring going with a double that scored Jessica Odom. The Lady Senators loaded the bases shortly after before Bennett cleared the bases with two outs, doubling off the fence.

The Lady Senators continued to score with two more in the third as Phipps and Campbell both collected RBIs with singles. Jackson State got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, but Bennett led off the fourth with a home run to make it 16-1.

In the fifth, Walters State capped things off with four more runs. The runs came courtesy of an error by the left fielder, a Bennett RBI single, a Sam Chavez sacrifice fly and Odom single.

Ashley Milligan got the start in the circle for Walters State and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two. Abigayle Holt replaced her in the third and pitched the final three innings, allowing just one run.

Game Two: Walters State 11, Jackson State 5

In game two, the Lady Senators kept the offense up, scoring three in the top of the fifth to break a 5-5 tie and went on for the win.

For the second straight game, Walters State got the scoring going first in the top of the first with a run. That run came from Laramie, who scored Campbell on a single.

In the second, the Lady Senators scratched a run across off an error to make it 2-0. However, after a scoreless top of the third from Walters State, Jackson State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning at 2-2.

Walters State scored three runs in the fourth to retake the lead as Tatum Dye hit a sacrifice fly, Odom singled home Beech and Harper doubled in Odom. But once again, Jackson State tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth at 5-5.

The tie would last less than one batter as Bennett hit her second home run of the day to lead off the fifth and make it 6-5. Odom added to the fun later in the inning with a two-run home run to make it 8-5.

The Lady Senators added one more in the sixth on a Laramie RBI single and two in the seventh as Odom tripled in a run and Phipps singled her home.

Allison Chandler got the start in the circle in game two and pitched 3.1 innings before being replaced by Ashley Milligan. Milligan pitched the remainder of the game, picking up her second win of the day.
