Lady Senators complete series sweep of Southwest Tennessee

ARLINGTON, TN – Walters State completed their third conference series sweep of the season on Saturday, taking down Southwest Tennessee 16-0 in five innings and 13-5 in six innings. 

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 22-6 on the season and 12-2 in TCCAA play. 

 

Game One: Walters State 16, Southwest Tennessee 0 (5 Innings) 

 

In game one, Walters State tallied their sixth shutout of the season with a dominating win in five innings. 

 

Ashley Milligan got the start in the circle for the Lady Senators and threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out four. Abigayle Holt replaced her in the fourth inning and pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two. 

 

At the plate for Walters State, Jessica Odom, Tatum Dye and Kasey Bennett led the way. Odom went 4-for-4 at the plate in the leadoff spot and had four RBIs while Dye and Bennett each had three hits and three RBIs. Bennett and Halle Laramie each hit home runs. 

 

As a team, Walters State had 17 hits in the game. 

 

Bennett made her presence felt early in game one for Walters State, blasting a three-run home run over the fence in center to make it 3-0 in the first. The Lady Senators tallied two more runs in the second as Odom singled in Oliva Harris and Dye doubled in Odom. 

 

Five more runs came across the plate for Walters State in the third as Harris doubled in Bennett and Brianna Beech to make it 7-0, Odom singled in Ava Brooks and Dye doubled home Odom to make it 10-0.

 

After a scoreless fourth inning, Walters State put the game away in the top of the fifth with six more runs. First, it was Odom singling in Kaitlyn Harper and Dye scoring Maggie Johnson on a fielder's choice. Laramie was the next batter and made it 14-0 with her fifth home run of the season. 

 

Two more runs scored in the inning to cap things off when Brooks singled in Bennett and Harper doubled home Beech.

 

Game Two: Walters State 13, Southwest Tennessee 5 (6 Innings) 

 

In game two, the Lady Senators scored in five of six innings as they completed the series sweep. 

 

Allison Chandler got the start in the circle for the Lady Senators in game two and threw four innings, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out one. Milligan pitched the final two innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three. 

 

At the plate in game two, it was Laramie leading the way with three hits and three RBIs while Bennett had two hits and two RBIs. Brooks and Harper each hit home runs in the game, going back-to-back in the sixth inning. 

 

For the fourth straight game of the weekend, Walters State started the scoring off in the top of the first with two runs. Those runs came courtesy of a Bennett RBI single and Laramie scoring on a steal of home.

 

After a scoreless second, the Lady Senators made it 3-0 in the top of the third as Beech singled home Laramie. Southwest answered back in the bottom of the third with their first run of the day. 

 

In the fourth, three more runs came across for Walters State. The Lady Senators loaded the bases before Laramie cleared them with a three-RBI double. In the fifth, Sarah King got in on the fun with a two-RBI single that made it 8-1 Walters State. 

 

The Lady Senators capped their scoring off in the sixth with five more runs as Bennett doubled in Dye, Harper hit a three-run homer and Brooks hit a solo home run to go back-to-back. Southwest added four more runs in the sixth, but it was too little, too late.

Walters State will return home as they take on Volunteer State beginning next Friday, April 1. The Friday doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
