Bennett slugs Lady Senators to sweep of Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – Walters State's Kasey Bennett proved to be a nightmare at the plate for Roane State pitchers on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Senators swept the Lady Raiders, 21-5 and 16-5 in five innings. 

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 25-9 overall and 15-5 in TCCAA play. 

 

Bennett drove in a combined 10 runs in both games, collecting five hits with three of them being home runs. 

 

Game One: Walters State 21, Roane State 5 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Walters State totaled 19 hits as they cruised to the big win in five innings. 

 

Bennett led the way at the plate with two home runs and five RBIs. She also scored three runs.

 

Along with Bennett, Jessica Campbell, Olivia Harris and Jessica Odom each collected three hits while Brianna Beech knocked in four runs. Odom, Beech and Harris each hit home runs. 

 

In the circle, Ashley Milligan got the start for Walters State. Milligan threw three innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four. Allison Chandler pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on three hits. 

 

Walters State used two two-run home runs in the top of the first to get things going early. Bennett hit the first one before Odom hit the other one later in the inning. 

 

Roane State responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Walters State broke the game open in the third with four more runs. Tatum Dye started things off with an RBI single before Ava Brooks and Campbell hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 7-2. Bennett drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

 

In the fourth, six more Lady Senators crossed the plate to extend the lead. Harris started things off with a two-run homer before Dye had an RBI single and Campbell had a sacrifice fly that scored Dye. Bennett concluded the scoring with her second two-run homer of the game. 

 

Roane State scored one in the bottom of the fourth on an error, but Walters State responded with seven in the top of the fifth. Kaitlyn Harper and Jessica Campbell each drove in runs, Campbell drove in two on an error, before Beech hit a grand slam to make it 21-4.

 

Roane State scored two in the fifth but it was too little, too late. 

 

Game Two: Walters State 16, Roane State 5 (5 Innings) 

 

Despite the cold and snowy conditions, Walters State kept their bats on fire in game two with 14 more hits and 16 more runs. The Lady Senators scored 12 in the first inning. 

 

Bennett once again led the way at the plate with three hits and five RBIs. She hit a home run as well. 

 

Along with Bennett, Odom continued her impressive day with three hits and three RBIs while Harris and Dye each knocked in two more runs. 

 

In the circle, Abigayle Holt got the start and threw three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Chandler pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits. 

 

The Lady Senators put the game away in the top of the first with 12 runs in game two. The Lady Senators came to the plate 17 times in the inning. Bennett was the star in the inning with a bases-clearing three-RBI double. Dye knocked in two runs in the inning as well.

 

From there, Walters State scored one in the third on a Brooks RBI groundout, two in the fourth on a solo home run from Bennett and an Odom RBI single and one in the fifth on a Bennett fielder's choice that scored Brooks.

Walters State will be back in action on Sunday for two more games with Roane State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
