Lady Senators complete Sunday sweep of Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – With much warmer conditions on Sunday afternoon, Walters State completed a four-game series sweep of Roane State with 6-1 and 11-3 victories.

 

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 27-9 overall and 17-5 in TCCAA play. 

 

Game One: Walters State 6, Roane State 1 

 

In game one on Sunday, Allison Chandler and Ashley Milligan gave up just one run, an unearned run, on three hits to give the Lady Senators the win.

 

Chandler got the start in the circle and threw the first three innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one. Milligan pitched the final four innings, allowing one hit while striking out six. 

 

At the plate, Jessica Campbell led the way with three hits while Jessica Odom and Tatum Dye chipped in two each. Dye, Ava Brooks and Olivia Harris each had doubles while Campbell stole three bases. 

 

Roane State got on the board first in the game with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Lady Senators tied it at one in the top of the second. Walters State's run came on an RBI single from Brooks that scored Dye. 

 

In the third, the Lady Senators tacked on two more runs to take the lead. Dye drove in one of the runs with an RBI single while the other came on an error by the catcher that allowed Brianna Beech to score. 

 

Following a scoreless fourth, the Lady Senators brought across two more runs to make it 5-1. Sarah King scored one of the runs on a wild pitch while Bennett drove in the other with a sacrifice fly that scored Brooks. 

 

The Lady Senators capped off the scoring in game one with a run in the seventh. That run came courtesy of a Harris sacrifice fly that scored Campbell.

 

Game Two: Walters State 11, Roane State 3

 

In game two, Halle Laramie drove in four runs as the Lady Senators eased to the sweep.

 

Laramie was 3-5 in the game with two home runs and four RBIs. Along with Laramie, Jessica Odom had a home run and three hits to go with three RBIs. Kasey Bennett also hit her fourth home run of the weekend while Kaitlyn Harper added a homer. 

 

In the circle, Abigayle Holt got the start and threw five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out five. Milligan pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four. 

 

It was the Lady Senators who jumped ahead early in game two with two runs in the first. The runs came on solo home runs from Bennett and Laramie. Walters State added one more run in the second to make it 3-0 as Grayson Phipps singled in Dye. 

 

In the fourth, four more runs crossed the plate for Walters State as they blew the game open. Harper led off the inning with a solo blast and Odom followed it up with a three-run homer that made it 7-0.

 

Roane State got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth, but Walters State finished it out with one run in the sixth and three in the seventh. The run in the sixth came on a sacrifice fly by Beech while the three in the seventh came on a Laramie home run.

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Spartanburg Methodist. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
