No. 19 Walters State wins opening game of TCCAA/Region VII Tournament over Columbia State

CHATTANOOGA, TN – No. 19 Walters State wasted no time picking up where they left off to end the regular season on Sunday evening, easily taking down Columbia State, 13-1, in their opening game of the TCCAA/Region VII Tournament at Chattanooga State.

The three-seeded Lady Senators improved to 40-9 on the season with the win and will face the winner of Volunteer State and Roane State on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Walters State has now won 18 games in-a-row.

On Sunday, it was Ashley Milligan leading the way again in the circle, striking out 11 of the 15 batters she faced to improve to 18-0 on the season. That included striking out the first seven Columbia State batters. Milligan threw four innings, allowing one run on one hit.

Adrienne Morrison threw the final inning, a scoreless fifth to end the game.

At the plate, Kasey Bennett and Jessica Odom each homered while Jessica Campbell had three hits and three RBIs. Brianna Beech also drove in two runs.

The Lady Senators got the scoring going early against Columbia State, with three runs in the first inning. Following an error that allowed Campbell to score, Olivia Harris walked with the bases-loaded to make it 2-0. The final run came as Tatum Dye walked with the bases-loaded.

Following a scoreless second inning, Columbia State got on the board with a run in the top of the third to make it 3-1. However, the Lady Senators answered with three in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to 6-1. Those runs came courtesy of an error that allowed Harris to cross the plate, an RBI single by Ava Brooks and a bases-loaded walk to Beech.

In the fourth, the Lady Senators broke the game open with seven runs. Walters State loaded the bases in the inning and Campbell tripled them all home to make it 9-1. Bennett was the next batter and hammered a two-run homer to make it 11-1. Odom capped things off with a two-run homer of her own.
