Eighth-ranked Lady Senators close out JUCO Softball Extravaganza with two wins

OXFORD, AL – No. 8 Walters State closed their time at the JUCO Softball Extravaganza strong on Saturday, taking a 3-0 win over Shelton State in game one and a 9-0 win over Gordon State in game two. 

 

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 9-1 on the season.

 

GAME ONE: No. 8 Walters State 3, Shelton State 0

 

Tori Coffman picked up her sixth win of the season in the opener on Saturday, striking out 14 in a complete game shutout. 

 

Coffman allowed just two hits in the game and upped her strikeout total to 62 on the season.

 

At the plate, Abigail Taylor led the way with three hits. Kailey Dixon, Olivia Neese and Nora Mack each tripled, as well. 

 

The two teams remained scoreless for the first two innings, but Walters State struck in the third inning as Dixon tripled and Mack tripled her home. The lead grew to 2-0 a few batters later as Haidyn Campbell grounded out but scored Mack.

 

In the fourth, Walters State scored the final run of the game as Neese tripled in Taylor to make it 3-0. 

 

GAME TWO: No. 8 Walters State 9, Gordon State 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, Walters State got three more solid innings from Coffman in the circle and two from Hayley Lawing

 

Coffman gave up no hits and struck out seven, picking up her seventh win of the season. Lawing gave up one hit and struck out one. 

 

At the plate, Dixon had three hits, two of them being triples. Campbell knocked in two runs as well, while Neese had three hits and scored three runs. 

 

Dixon led the game off with a triple, and Mack drove her in to make it 1-0 two batters in to start game two. Campbell quickly made it 2-0 just two batters later with an RBI single. The Lady Senators would strike one more time in the inning, as Sarah Evers doubled home Campbell to make it 3-0. 

 

Walters State added to their lead in the second with three more runs to make it 6-0. Those runs came on a Dixon RBI single, a Campbell RBI double and a Brooklyn Copley RBI single. 

 

The third inning was more of the same for Walters State, scoring two more runs. Carley Cook started things with a pinch-hit home run, and a fielder's choice scored Neese to make it 8-0.

 

The final run for Walters State came in the fourth, as Dixon tripled again and scored Neese to make it 9-0.

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action next Friday at Columbia State. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
