Seventh-ranked Lady Senators sweep doubleheader against Columbia State

COLUMBIA, TN – No. 7 Walters State got TCCAA play started off strong with two wins over Columbia State on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Senators took game one 11-1 in five innings and won 16-5 in five innings in game two.

 

With the wins, Walters State improved 11-1 overall and 2-0 in TCCAA play.

 

GAME ONE: No. 7 Walters State 11, Columbia State 1 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, the Lady Senators hit four home runs in the win.

 

Nora Mack, Haidyn Campbell, Brooklyn Copley and Imari Golden all hit home runs. Kailey Dixon, Mack, Campbell, Golden and Olivia Neese each had three hits. Mack drove in three runs, while Dixon, Campbell and Golden each had two RBI.

 

In the circle, Tori Coffman (8-0) threw a complete game. Coffman gave up one run on two hits and struck out 11. 

 

The Lady Senators started things off in the first inning, as Campbell had an RBI single to make it 1-0. Columbia tied the game at one in the bottom of the first. 

 

However, in the second, the Lady Senators added three more runs as Dixon doubled home Golden, Mack singled home Neese and Jules Johnson had a groundout that scored Dixon to make it 4-1. 

 

The Lady Senators added to their lead in the third with two runs, as Golden singled in a run and Dixon scored a run on a groundout to make it 6-1. In the fourth, the Lady Senators picked up their first homer of the game as Campbell hit a solo shot. Copley was next up, and she made it 8-1 with a solo homer. 

 

The Lady Senators closed things out in the fifth with three more runs to make it 11-1. Golden started things with a solo shot, and Mack sent one out for a two-run homer. 

 

GAME TWO: No. 7 Walters State 16, Columbia State 5 (5 Innings) 

 

In game two, Walters State had 10 different players drive in runs.

 

Mack led the way with her second homer of the day, picked up two hits and had three RBI. Dixon and Neese had two hits, as well while nine others drove in a run apiece. 

 

In the circle, Hayley Lawing pitched a complete game. Lawing gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits and struck out four. 

 

The Lady Senators started things immediately in game two with three first-inning runs. Campbell drove in the first run on an RBI single, Abigail Taylor drove in a run with a bunt single and an error scored the third run to make it 3-0. 

 

In the second, Walters State broke the game open with four more runs. Those runs came courtesy of a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, a bases loaded walk, a passed ball that scored a run and another bases loaded walk that made it 7-0. 

 

Following a run in the third on a dropped third strike that made it 8-0, Walters State scored three more in the fourth. Those runs came on a Mack three-run bomb that made it 11-0.

 

The Lady Senators closed things out with five runs in the fifth. Kendal Mason started it off with an RBI single, and an Alex Blanton groundout scored a run to make it 13-0. The final runs came on an RBI groundout by Dixon, a passed ball that scored Mason and a Jayden Salts RBI single.

 

Columbia scored five in the fifth, but the Lady Senators ended it there.

Walters State will be back in action on Sunday for two more games at Columbia State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET.
