Lady Senators grab important conference win over Cleveland State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State outscored Cleveland State 16-6 in the second quarter Wednesday evening and never let up on their way to a 83-50 victory.

 

With the win, Walters State improves to 12-5 overall and 10-1 in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators continue to hold onto first place in the conference with four conference games remaining. 

 

"It's always good to get a win in the conference," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "I was happy to see everyone contribute tonight. I thought we did a good job defensively, especially in the second quarter, and that translated over to the offensive side as well. Just a good win to get." 

 

Walters State was led in the game by Ryann Woodley with a season-high 19 points. Woodley hit three 3-pointers in the second half to help the Lady Senators continue to pull away.

 

Along with Woodley, two more got into double figures with Germariona Hollingsworth totaling 14 points and Maiya Reed finishing with 12 points. 

 

Other scorers in the game for Walters State were Kiera Hill with eight, Izarria Alexander with seven, Tyasia Reed with six, Matty Tanner with five, Akiraona Steverson with three and Rose Morrow and Elizabeth Chambers each with two.

 

All 10 players who saw the floor for the Lady Senators got into the scoring column.

 

"That was really good to see," Coleman said. "We always like to get everybody involved, and we were able to do that tonight." 

 

Things started off strong for the Lady Senators as Alexander scored and Tanner knocked down a 3-pointer to open the scoring up. Cleveland State answered back with two straight buckets but a 6-0 run by Walters State pushed the lead to 11-4. Scoring was at a premium from there, and the Lady Senators led 14-9 after one.

 

The second quarter was the turning point of the game for Walters State as they held Cleveland State to just one field goal and four free throws. The Lady Cougars actually scored first to open the quarter, but Walters State rallied off 14 straight to go up 28-11. Five different Lady Senators scored on the run. 


Walters State led 30-15 at the half.

 

The third quarter was more of the same as Walters State almost doubled their total with 29 points in the quarter. Woodley had seven during the quarter while Hill and Hollingsworth each had six. Walters State extended their lead in the quarter and led 59-37.

 

In the fourth, Woodley started things off with a 3-pointer and the Lady Senators were off again. Walters State totaled 21 points in the final 10 minutes with eight coming from Woodley, six from Hollingsworth and four from Reed. Woodley capped off the game with a 3-pointer.

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to take on Volunteer State. Tip is set for 3 p.m.

In the two teams' first meeting this year, Walters State was victorious, 84-42.
