Lady Senators remain unbeaten in TCCAA play; defeat Vol State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State kept their perfect conference record intact on Saturday afternoon, defeating Vol State 52-39.

 

With the win, the Lady Senators moved to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in TCCAA play.

 

It was the defensive effort that led the charge in the game as the Lady Senators held Vol State to just 33% from the field and forced 23 turnovers.

 

"I think we did a pretty decent job on the defensive end today," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We created a lot of turnovers and came away with (15) steals. We just have to continue to work and keep getting better." 

 

Asia Barr was the leader for Walters State in the game, coming off the bench to score 13 points, grab six rebounds, and force six steals in 35 minutes of play. It was a season-high in points and minutes for Barr.

 

Along with Barr, Kailyn Farrell and Tyasia Reed both finished with 11 points while Farrell picked up her third double-double of the season with 13 rebounds. 

 

Other contributors in the game for the Lady Senators were Izarria Alexander with seven points and six rebounds, Aminata Tal with six points and Rose Morrow with four points. 

 

As a team, Walters State grabbed 40 rebounds and assisted on 13 of their made shots. 

 

Vol State got on the board first to start the game, but Tyasia Reed gave the Lady Senators the lead with a 3-pointer. Vol State would take one last lead at 4-3 before Tal scored and Farrell nailed a trey to make it 8-4 in favor of Walters State.

 

The Lady Senators kept the lead from there, getting points from Barr and Tal, and led 12-7 after one quarter.

 

In the second, Barr drained a 3-pointer and Tyasia Reed hit a shot to make it 19-9. Tyasia Reed and Barr combined for four 3-pointers in the quarter for Walters State, and they led 28-15 at the break. 

 

The third quarter was the largest offensive output of the game from Walters State as they scored 17 to up their lead to 45-29. Barr scored five more in the quarter while Farrell and Morrow each had four. 

 

The fourth quarter was a defensive battle on both sides as Walters State was able to hang on for the 12-point victory. Farrell scored four in the final 10 minutes.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Roane State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
