Lady Senators defense on full display in 62-36 win over Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – The Walters State Lady Senators pride themselves on their defense, and that was evident on Saturday afternoon.

Taking on a Dyersburg State team that defeated the Lady Senators earlier in the season, Walters State held the Lady Eagles to single digit point totals in two quarters on their way to a 62-36 victory.

With the win, Walters State improved to 11-6 on the season and 8-2 in TCCAA play.

Coming into Saturday's game, Dyersburg averaged seven 3-pointers per game and had not hit less than three in a game this season. However, on Saturday, Dyersburg State not only didn't get close to their average. They didn't hit a single 3-pointer for the game.

For Walters State, they hit eight 3-pointers. Asia Barr hit four of them and led the way with 18 points, while Kyra Perkins hit two and finished with 15 points. Other scorers for Walters State were Kristyna Boyd with 13, Briontanay Marshall with six, Janae Charles with five, Juilenne Ongbagnamen with three and Tianna Rhodes with two.

The Lady Senators set the tone from the beginning, breaking out to a 19-13 lead after one quarter. Boyd was unstoppable in the opening 10 minutes with eight points, while Perkins had five and Barr had three.

The defense for both teams took over in the second quarter, with 15 total points scored between both teams. Walters State scored 10 of those points and led 29-18 at the half. Marshall and Perkins each had four points for Walters State.

In the third, Barr single-handedly outscored Dyersburg State as the Lady Senators built a 49-26 lead going to the fourth. Barr had 10 points in the quarter, while Dyersburg managed just eight points as a team.

The fourth quarter was much of the same for both teams, as Walters State scored 13 more points and cruised to the win. Boyd had five points for Walters State in the final 10 minutes.
