Walters State wins five-set thriller over Chattanooga State

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Throughout the start of this volleyball season, Walters State coach Megan Blaylock has wanted to see her team finish out a match.

Coming into Tuesday night's match, the Lady Senators had played in three five-set matches but had failed to close one out for a victory.

On Tuesday night, that finally changed.

Blaylock got her wish as the Lady Senators bounced back from a set four loss, taking set five over Chattanooga State for a 3-2 win (12-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12).

With the win, Walters State moves to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Lady Senators are currently on a two-match winning streak.

It was an inauspicious start for Walters State as the Tigers got up early in the first set and never let off the gas for an easy 25-12 win.

However, the Lady Senators handled the adversity well. In set two, Walters State scored the first two points, one coming on a kill from Jordan Moore. Chatt State would tie the match but at 6-6 the Lady Senators scored four straight on a kill from Lydia Buchannan, an ace by Hannah Freeman and a block by Moore.

The Lady Senators would then up their lead to 13-7, forcing a Chattanooga State timeout. The Tigers tried to rally after the timeout, but Walters State kept the pressure on. The lead got to 19-12 before the Lady Senators closed it out at 25-19.

In set three, Walters State started quick again, getting out to an 11-4 lead, forcing a Chattanooga State timeout. The Lady Senators would continue to play well, but the Tigers slowly climbed back into the set and actually took an 18-17 lead before a Mackenzie Sweigart kill tied the set back up.

Parker Hurd kept the momentum moving for Walters State with an ace following the Sweigart kill. The Tigers failed to go away though, tying the set at 20 before an error gave Walters State the lead back. Walters State wouldn't let the Tigers any closer as they took set three, 25-21.

It appeared the Lady Senators might end the match in four as they got up before Chattanooga State rallied back and took set four 25-23 and forced a deciding fifth set.

In set five, Walters State came out firing with five straight points to go up 5-1 and force a Chattanooga State timeout. Chattanooga State would keep fighting, getting the lead down to one. But Walters State didn't allow them to tie the match and pulled it off as a Moore block ended the match with a 15-12 win.

UP NEXT:

Walters State will be back in action this weekend as they take part in the SMC Invitational in Spartanburg, SC. The Lady Senators will play host Spartanburg Methodist and St. Johns River State College on Friday before closing it out on Saturday with matches against Monroe College and USC Sumter.
