Walters State falls twice in SMC Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Walters State fell twice on Friday night in the SMC Invitational, 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-18) in the opening match to Spartanburg Methodist and 3-0 (25-9, 25-5, 25-10) to No. 15 St. John's River State College.

 

Walters State falls to 2-6 on the year with both losses.

 

Against Spartanburg Methodist, the Lady Senators got up early in set one, leading 7-4 before the Pioneers came back and tied the match up at 12.

 

Walters State kept the pressure on and forced a Spartanburg timeout up 17-15. The Lady Senators continued the push out of the timeout and got up 21-16. However, the Pioneers played lights out the remainder of the set and took it 25-23.

 

In set two, the Lady Senators kept it close to start before Spartanburg went on a run and led 17-9. They would not allow Walters State back into the set for the remainder of the time, taking it 25-15 to go up 2-0.

 

Needing a win to keep the match going, Walters State went in the opposite direction as the Pioneers went up 7-1 early. Walters State fought back and made it close, staving off three match points before the Pioneers closed it out with a 25-18 victory.

 

In match two, the Lady Senators struggled all throughout as No. 15 St. John's River State College got up early and never let off the gas in an impressive victory.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Monroe College at 11 a.m. and USC Sumter at 3 p.m. to close out the SMC Invitational.
