Walters State finishes week undefeated after sweep of Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – Following an early season loss to Roane State, Walters State volleyball coach Megan Blaylock said her team needed to learn how to fight and close out matches.

Message received.

On Thursday night at Roane State, the Lady Senators broke out to an early lead and never left the match in doubt as they swept the Raiders, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-18).

With the win, Walters State moves to 5-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. They have now won three matches in-a-row, winning their last nine sets.

"I am so proud of how they stepped up and filled the roles we asked them to play," Blaylock said. "We've been concentrating on controlling what we can control and focusing on minimizing our errors. We worked on our block the last few practices, and I think you could tell tonight. We still have quite a bit of room for improvement, but we got better tonight and I'm very proud of the entire team effort."

In set one, Walters State set the tone early as they scored the first three points of the match. The lead was then extended to 6-2 on a Jordan Moore block. Roane State would tie the match at 11 but the Lady Senators then took control and got up 20-14 after a kill from Raenah Barton and back-to-back blocks by Moore. The Lady Senators took the set, 25-20.

Once again in set two the Lady Senators got up quick and led 5-3. Roane State tied the set at eight, but a Mattison Rowland kill gave Walters State a lead they would never relinquish. The Lady Senators then grew the lead to 15-11, leading to a Roane State timeout. Roane State would cut the set to 19-17 before the Lady Senators finished strong and went up 2-0 with a 25-18 set two win.

Wanting to show the fight and finish that Blaylock was hoping to see out of them, Walters State broke out to a 6-0 lead in set three, all but putting the set and match to bed. The run was all on the serve of Lydia Buchanan, who had back-to-back aces. The lead grew to 8-2 before Walters State ended the match with a 25-18 set three victory.

Up Next:

Walters State will be back in action at home on Wednesday for yet another conference match against Chattanooga State. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
