Walters State defeats Catawba Valley for first time in program history

HICKORY, NC – Walters State took down host Catawba Valley Community College for the first time in program history on Friday evening in the Catawba Valley Invitational.

The Lady Senators took down Catawba 3-2 in five sets (20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 13-25, 19-17). Walters State also played No. 19 Lake-Sumter State College earlier in the day, falling 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25).

With the split, Walters State moves to 7-8 on the season.

After the opening match defeat, Walters State fought tough in the first set against Catawba but eventually would fall 25-20.

Not to be deterred, Walters State got back on the right track in set two as they built up a 21-15 lead and held off a Catawba rally for an easy 25-19 win to even the match up.

In set three, it was more of the same from Walters State as they scored three of the last four points of the set to go up 2-1. One of those points came on a huge kill from Jordan Moore.

After Catawba took control in set four, the Lady Senators took back momentum in the fifth set. The set went the distance and then some, but Walters State fought through adversity for a 19-17 winner.

UP NEXT:

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Cleveland State. The Lady Senators will be looking for their fifth straight conference win. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
