HARRIMAN, TN — The Walters State volleyball team battled for five sets on Tuesday evening against Roane State but ultimately fell, 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 16-14).
With the loss, Walters State falls to 12-9 overall and 7-2 in the region. With the Region VII season finishing on Tuesday, Roane State will be the No. 1 seed in next week's Region Tournament while the Lady Senators will be the No. 2 seed. Both teams tied in Region VII play with identical 7-2 records.
The Lady Senators came out firing in set one on Tuesday as they won by five with Jordan Moore closing it out. In set two, the Lady Senators battled to start and got out to an 8-4 lead on a Mackenzie Sweigart kill that forced a Roane State timeout.
The Lady Senators would extend the lead even more following the timeout and got up 13-7 as Mercedes Collins and Raenah Barton each had kills. That forced another Roane State timeout. However, after the timeout the Lady Raiders battled back and eventually took the set 25-22.
In set three, it was Walters State's time to mount a comeback when the Lady Senators battled from down 16-12 and came all the way back to take the set. During the run, Sweigart had two kills while Mattison Rowland had three. At 21-21, the Lady Senators scored the final four points of the set.
Following a loss in set four, Walters State found some momentum to begin the deciding fifth set. Moore had two quick kills as the Lady Senators went up 3-1. The two teams would battle from there with the lead for either team never going above two. Roane State would eventually go ahead 14-13 and, while Walters State fought off one match point, weren't able to do it again as the Lady Raiders took the match.

Walters State will be back in action on Monday when they play their final regular season match against Cumberland University JV. That match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
