Strong second half propels Senators to road win

ATHENS, Tenn. — Trailing 34-32 at halftime on the road against Tennessee Wesleyan's junior varsity squad, Walters State needed a spark in the second half to turn the game around.

 

They got the spark in the form of a quartet that combined for 38 of the 55 points scored in the second half by the Senators, as Walters State outscored the home team by 31 points in the final 20 minutes to grab an 87-58 victory to improve to 4-2 on the year.

 

Seth-Lenard Battle (11), Khiry Shelton (10), Miles Thomas (9) and Kobe Powell (8) lit it up for WSCC in the second half, helping push the team to victory. The Senators opened the second half on a 30-11 run in the first 10 minutes to make it 62-45 and never let up in collecting the fourth win of the campaign.

 

Thomas led all scorers with 18 points in the game, scoring 9 points in each half, while Battle pumped in a career-high 17 points in the win. Shelton chipped in a dozen points, while Westin Reynolds tossed in a career-best 10 points, Kobe Powell had his best night with 9 points and Jaden Lewis the same with 8 points in the victory.

 

Taurean Jones led the Bulldogs with 12 points in the contest, scoring 10 in the first half, while Chris Fayne had 9 points and Jimmy Williams added 8 in the defeat.

 

The Senators will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Roane State for homecoming inside 'Z' Buda Gymnasium and Assembly Hall. Tipoff of the TCCAA opener against the Raiders is set for 2 p.m.
