Simpson scores 28 as Senators top Volunteer State

GALLATIN, TN – Micah Simpson scored a season-high 28 points on Saturday afternoon as Walters State defeated Volunteer State, 84-72.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 19-9 overall and 11-5 in TCCAA play. 

 

Simpson was 11-19 from the floor and 4-8 from the 3-point line. He also had four rebounds and four steals.

 

Along with Simpson, Ty Hurst scored 22 points on 8-11 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. He also had four assists and two steals.

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Jaylen Wharton with 12 points, Michael Houge with 11 points and 12 rebounds, Destin Barker with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists and Elijah Davis with 11 assists and six rebounds. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 55% from the field, grabbed 34 rebounds and dished out 23 assists. 

 

Defensively, the Senators held Vol State to 38% from the field and forced 12 turnovers.

 

It was a back-and-forth first half as Walters State claimed a 39-36 lead over Vol State at the break. Simpson had 19 points in the first 20 minutes, going 7-11 from the field and drained three 3-pointers. Houge added five points and five rebounds while Barker had nine points. 

 

In the second half, the Senators pulled ahead and held on for the 84-72 victory. Hurst was phenomenal in the second half with 18 points on 6-7 shooting. Simpson added nine more points and four rebounds while Wharton scored 10 on 5-6 shooting. 

 

As a team in the second half, Walters State shot 63%, making 19-30 shots.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they travel to take on Roane State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
