Lady Senators run sweep streak to eight straight

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State's volleyball team threw a block party on Alumni Day at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium and Assembly Hall Saturday in sweeping a pair of matches from Patrick Henry and Cleveland State.

The Lady Senators tallied a dozen blocks on the day, seven of which came from Kaley Muncy, as they dominated Patrick Henry in the opener by the scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-13 before taking down Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Cleveland State in the finale by the scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-15 to notch their eighth straight sweep.

With the wins, Walters State now stands at 17-7 on the year and 3-0 in TCCAA play, with just one match left in league action this week at Chattanooga State.

Cleveland State, who swept Patrick Henry (6-11) in the second of the three matches on the day, fell to 9-13 overall and 0-4 in TCCAA action.

The nightcap of the tri-match quickly turned into a runaway for the Lady Senators, as Walters State fell behind early before using a 10-1 run midway through the set to pull ahead 17-7. Before the spurt, Muncy served up three consecutive aces to give the home team its first lead of the match, and a pair of kills from Olivia Kent followed by kills from Muncy and Mckenzie Jenkins made it a 10-point margin.

Courtney Dotson added a kill to make it 20-10 before Micayla Vallie and Dotson both had kills late in the game to give Walters State 25-15 victory.

The second game looked like it was heading towards an easy win for the Lady Senators, but the Lady Cougars had other plans. Walters State led 20-13 before the Cleveland State rallied for five straight points to cut the margin to a pair. WSCC rebounded however, and a block from Muncy and a kill from Jenkins helped the Lady Senators pull out a 25-20 win.

The third game was tied at 4 early on, but a 5-0 run by the Lady Senators gave them the lead for good. Muncy later notched 4 blocks and 2 kills in a 6-0 spurt to help put the game out of reach, as WSCC won 25-15 to close out the match.

Muncy tallied 10 kills and 6 blocks in the win, while Vallie have 8 kills, Jenkins added 7 and Kent had 5 in the win. Hayley Wolfe recorded 17 digs, while Lexi Wakefield had 16 and Sydney Hurd totaled 11 digs and a team-high 15 assists. Dotson added 13 assists in the win.

In the early match, Muncy had 11 kills and a block, while Jenkins smashed 8 kills and Vallie added 7 kills and 7 digs in the contest. Dotson dished out 22 assists and Hurd tallied a dozen helpers, while Wakefield notched 9 digs and Hurd had 8 in the win.

The Lady Senators will be on the road Wednesday evening for the final TCCAA match of the regular season at Chattanooga State before closing out the regular season slate with a home doubleheader next Saturday against Snead State and Spartanburg Methodist.
