Senators struggle on the road against Chattanooga State

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Walters State trailed by one at the half on Wednesday evening to Chattanooga State but were outscored by 15 in the second half as the Tigers prevailed, 86-70.

With the loss, Walters State fell to 10-7 on the season and 3-3 in TCCAA play.

Elijah Davis led the way in the scoring column for Walters State with 19 points and four assists while Michael Houge recorded his third straight double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Other contributors in the game for the Senators were Jair Horton with 11 points and five rebounds, Riley Cooper with eight points and six rebounds, Malachi Hale with seven points and five rebounds, Ty Hurst with four points, Micah Simpson with three points, Destin Barker with two points and four rebounds and Jaylen Wharton with two points.

It was a quick start to the game for the Senators as Hurst scored just six seconds in. Walters State would hold the lead for the next few minutes after Barker, Hurst and Houge all scored to make it 8-4.

However, Chattanooga State would eventually go on an 8-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. Cooper ended the Tigers run with four points, and Davis cut the lead to one with a layup. The Tigers answered with a 3-pointer before four straight by Houge tied the game at 20.

From there, the Tigers retook the lead and held it until four more points from Houge with three minutes to go in the half gave the Senators a 31-29 lead. Chatt State responded with seven straight to go up five, but Walters State scored the final four points of the half to cut the lead to one at 36-35.

In the second half, Chattanooga State built a 12-point lead six minutes in before Walters State mounted a comeback as Davis scored and Simpson converted an old-fashioned 3-point play. The Senators eventually got the lead down to three at 56-53 after Horton drilled a 3-pointer and Davis made a free throw.

Unfortunately, that was as close as Walters State would come as Chatt State scored 30 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Davis had 14 points in the second half while Horton added seven.
