JACKSON, TN – Walters State completed a 2-0 week in the conference on Saturday evening with an 85-76 victory over Jackson State.
With the win, Walters State improved to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in TCCAA play.
Michael Houge once again led the way with his ninth double-double of the season. Houge had 21 points and 15 rebounds. Houge shot 9-12 from the field and has now scored double-digits in all 20 games.
Along with Houge, Riley Cooper finished with 17 points on 7-8 shooting and had eight rebounds. Elijah Davis added 16 points and five assists.
Other contributors for Walters State were Ty Hurst with nine points and three assists, Micah Simpson with six points, four rebounds and five assists, Malachi Hale with five points and six rebounds, Destin Barker with four points and three rebounds, Wade Pelfrey with three points, Jaylen Wharton with two points and Jair Horton with two points.
As a team, the Senators shot 52% from the field and had 38 rebounds. Defensively, the Senators forced 13 turnovers.
The Senators came out strong in the first half and led 38-35 at the break. Houge had 12 points and nine assists in the first half while Cooper added eight points and Hurst had seven. Walters State shot 50% in the first half and held Jackson State to 36%.
In the second half, Walters State added 47 more points and hung on for the nine-point victory. Davis had 12 points in the final 20 minutes while Houge had nine points and six rebounds. Cooper had nine points and five rebounds, as well.
The Senators shot 53% in the second half on their way to the win.
