Senators hold off Dyersburg for important conference win

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State broke the century mark for the sixth time this season, taking down Dyersburg on Saturday with a 102-87 victory.

With the win, Walters State improved to 15-7 on the season and 7-3 in TCCAA play.

"I knew it was going to be hard, even with them missing some of their players," Walters State coach Bill Carlyle said. "They're number one in the region for a reason. We weren't great defensively, but we won. It was a tough win. That was one of the tougher wins we have had in a while. Give Dyersburg credit."

Michael Houge continued to do Michael Houge things as he recorded his eighth straight double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Houge is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds per game.

Along with Houge, Ty Hurst had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists while Elijah Davis had 12 points and seven assists and Riley Cooper had 12 points and six rebounds.

Other contributors were Micah Simpson with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, Wade Pelfrey with eight points and four assists, Malachi Hale with eight points, Saevion Brown with five points, Jaylen Wharton with four points, Jair Horton with two points and Destin Barker with one point.

The Senators shot 60.6% in the game and 50% from 3-point land and grabbed 39 rebounds.

The first half was all offense for both teams as a combined 90 points were scored. The Senators led 50-40 as Houge had nine points and Hurst and Pelfrey had eight each. Pelfrey and Hurst both knocked home two 3-pointers while Hale and Brown each had five points.

In the second half, Dyersburg quickly got the lead down to three, but a Davis 3-point play made it 65-59. Dyersburg remained close from there, but Houge took over late to clinch the victory.
