Senators drop triple digits in win over Motlow State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Michael Houge is playing as well as anybody in basketball right now, and that continued on Wednesday evening.


Taking on Motlow State, Houge was 11-13 from the field, finishing with 28 points and 16 rebounds for his 11th straight double-double, as the Senators topped the Bucks 101-59. 

 

With the win, Walters State moved to 17-8 overall and 9-4 in TCCAA play. 

 

After Wednesday night's performance, Houge is averaging 18.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. Houge is second in the conference in points per game and third in rebounds per game. 

 

Along with Houge on Wednesday night, Ty Hurst finished with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds while Micah Simpson had 15 points as well. 

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Malachi Hale with 10 points, Destin Barker with eight points and 10 rebounds, Jair Horton with eight points and eight rebounds, Saevion Brown with six points, Jaylen Wharton with five points, Elijah Davis with four points, six assists and four steals and Riley Cooper with two points.

 

As a team, the Senators shot 51% from the field and grabbed 53 rebounds while dishing out 26 assists. Defensively, Walters State held Motlow to 38% from the field and forced 18 turnovers.

 

It was all Simpson to start for Walters State as he scored the first five points of the game to go up 5-0. The Senators grew their lead before taking off in the final five minutes of the half. With the score 25-14, Houge and Davis made layups. Following a made basket by the Bucks, Houge scored four straight before Hale scored to make it 35-17.

 

The Senators kept it going after that in the final minutes of the half and led 46-29 at the break. Houge capped things off with a layup with three seconds remaining. Houge was 6-7 in the first half with 15 points while Simpson had nine and Hurst had eight.

 

In the second half, it was all Walters State as they scored 55 points to cruise to the win. Nine players scored for the Senators in the final 20 minutes with Houge leading the way with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Barker had eight points while Hurst added seven. The Senators shot 57% from the field in the second half.

Walters State will be on the road on Saturday as they travel to face Southwest Tennessee. Tip is set for 5 p.m. ET.
