MEMPHIS, TN – Walters State overcame a two-point deficit with seven minutes to go on Saturday against Southwest Tennessee, outscoring the Saluqis 22-8 the rest of the way on their way to a 79-67 win.
With the victory, Walters State improved to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in TCCAA play.
Malachi Hale led the way for Walters State in the game with 18 points. Hale hit six 3-pointers and also pulled down nine rebounds.
Along with Hale, JR Jacobs and Charvez Ambrose finished with 13 points each. Jacobs had six assists and five rebounds, as well. Jair Horton was the other in double figures for Walters State with 12 points and nine rebounds. Seven of those rebounds were on the offensive end.
Other contributors for Walters State were Chi Shannon with five points and five rebounds, Greg Moore with five points, Micah Simpson with four points and six assists, Jaylen Wharton with four points and four rebounds, Jamar Livingston with three points and Jaylon Taylor with two points.
As a team, Walters State shot 23-60 from the field and made 12 3-pointers. The Senators had 16 assists and 47 rebounds.
Defensively, Walters State held Southwest Tennessee to 23% from 3-point range and 36 rebounds.
The Senators and Saluqis battled tough for the opening 20 minutes as Walters State trailed by one heading into the locker room, 32-31.
The Senators came out on fire from 3-point range and led 49-44 at the 12-minute mark. However, Southwest Tennessee found their rhythm and had a 59-57 advantage with seven minutes to go.
Needing a response, Walters State got it as they continued to knock down 3-pointers. The Senators finished the game on a 22-8 run and took the win.
