No. 21 Walters State wins TCCAA Regular Season Title

JACKSON, TN – No. 21 Walters State took a 95-61 win over Jackson State on Saturday afternoon, clinching their first TCCAA Regular Season Championship since 2019.

 

With the win, the Senators improved to 25-2 overall and 16-2 in TCCAA play. It's the most wins for a Senators team since the 2007-08 team went 32-3. 

 

The Senators were led on Saturday by Ramondo Battle with 20 points. Others in double figures were Micah Simpson with 13 points, Chi Shannon with 12 points and Malachi Hale with 10 points.

 

Other scorers for Walters State were Jaylen Wharton with eight points, Jair Horton with eight points, Charvez Ambrose with eight points, Jamar Livingston with six points, JR Jacobs with four points, Greg Moore with four points and Carter Metz with two points. 

 

The Senators started slow in the game, as Jackson State hung around for the first 10 minutes. However, Walters State opened things up in the final 10 minutes and led 48-22 at the break. Battle had 12 in the first half, while Horton had eight. Simpson had seven, and Shannon added six in the opening 20 minutes. 

 

In the second half, the Senators scored 47 more points and ran away with things. Battle had eight more points in the final 20 minutes, while Hale had all 10 of his points. Simpson, Livingston and Shannon had six points each, as well.

Walters State will be back in action for the TCCAA Tournament at Motlow State. The Senators will be the No. 1 seed and will play their first game on Saturday, March 9 at 12 p.m.
