Lady Senators dominate Volunteer State, 70-52

GALLATIN, Tenn. — After the opening period, the outcome was never in doubt. Walters State buried TCCAA rival Volunteer State 70-52, on a day where they Lady Senators seemingly could not miss from the floor.

WSCC (7-4, 6-0 TCCAA) shot 52.8 percent for the game and 50 percent from beyond the three-point line. They were 77.8 percent at the free throw line all while holding the Lady Pioneers (1-9, 0-4) to 33.9 percent shooting.

Alexis Trice scored the first points for Walters State 33 seconds into the game, sparking an 11-0 run that lasted nearly the first four minutes. Paris Mullins sank a jumper before Anaya Martin halted the scoreless run for Volunteer State with a layup.

It never stopped the bleeding for the Lady Pioneers, as it just made the score more respectable as the two teams traded baskets for the rest of the period. The Lady Senators led 22-15 after one.

WSCC stretched their lead to 36-26 at the half, holding Vol State to just 11 points in the second as Mullins continued to hit her jumpers Haley Comer nailed a three.

The Lady Pioneers came out firing in the third, putting forth their best effort of the contest and outscoring Walters State 17-16 in the period. Any hope of a comeback was stifled in the fourth when the Lady Senators defense held VSCC to just nine points.

WSCC dominated the boards, outrebounding Vol State 34-18. Walters State finished with 18 assists as a team to VSCC's eight.

Mullins picked up a double-double, leading the Lady Senators with 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Comer scored 13. Blayre Shultz finished with eight.

Volunteer State got 22 points for Martin and nine points from Alex McFarlin.

COUNTDOWN TO 1,000

With the victory, Walters State women's coach Dave Kragel now moves to 996 total career victories, just four away from 1,000.

Walters State gets a long break before it hits the hardwood again. They travel to Spartanburg Methodist on Sunday, Dec. 15 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
