Lady Senators continue winning ways with 76-35 thrashing of Southwest Tennessee

MEMPHIS, TN – Ever since a tough overtime loss to No. 19 Shelton State on December 16, 2023, the Walters State Lady Senators have dominated each time they've stepped foot on the court. 

 

On Saturday against Southwest Tennessee, that continued. 

 

The Lady Senators scored 23 points in the opening quarter and were off from there, taking down Southwest Tennessee with a 76-35 win.

 

With the victory, Walters State improved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators have won their last three games, outscoring their opponents 211-93.

 

Asia Barr led the way for Walters State on Saturday with 19 points, knocking in four 3-pointers and dishing out six assists. Others in double figures were Kyra Perkins with 18 points and six rebounds, Briontanay Marshall with 11 points, four blocks and four rebounds and Juilenne Ongbagnamen off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds. Ongbagnamen hit four 3-pointers. 

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Kristyna Boyd with six points and eight rebounds, Tianna Rhodes with four points, Janae Charles with four points, four blocks and eight rebounds and Emmanuella Amaefula with two points and six assists. 

 

As a team, the Lady Senators shot 28-61, assisting on 20 of those made shots. The Lady Senators hit 10-22 3-pointers and had 39 rebounds and 15 blocks. 

 

Defensively, Walters State held Southwest Tennessee to just 25% from the field and forced 27 turnovers. 

 

The Lady Senators started things off strong, getting out to a 23-13 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. In the second, Walters State doubled up Southwest with 14 points to the Lady Saluqis' seven points. Walters State led 37-20 at the half. 

 

The third quarter was more of the same as Walters State scored 18 points to Southwest's 11 and led 55-31 going to the fourth. In the fourth, Walters State ended things with a bang, scoring 21 points and holding Southwest to just four points.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Chattanooga State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
