Senators in sixth after first day of Walters State Fall Classic

MORRISTOWN, TN – Fraser Laird of Lincoln Memorial fired a 3-under 69 to take the top spot on the leaderboard on the first day of the Walters State Fall Classic played at The Country Club on Monday.

 

Laird came out strong as he birdied three of his first four holes and made the turn with a score of 34. He had birdies on 15 and 16 before parring the 18th hole to card a 69. His solid score allowed the Railsplitters to take the lead after the first round with a 4-over 292.

 

Second place is a logjam as five players shot an even par 72. Those include Roane State's Caleb Tipton, Louie Stott and Seth Robinette, Taylor Kilgore of Carson-Newman and LMU's Jantai Malataev. Jamie Dean of LMU and Sloan Brooks of Walters State are tied for seventh with a score of 74, Blake Williams of Tusculum is in ninth place with a 75 and rounding out the top 10 are Wiley Hickerson of Covenant College and Bowen Brantley of Walters State at 76.

 

Roane State is second with a team score of 295, Carson-Newman is in third at 304, fourth is Covenant College at 310 and Tusculum is fifth at 311. Rounding out the rest of the scores are Walters State (314), Cleveland State (335), Southwest Virginia (356), Pellissippi State (373) and Patrick Henry (375).

 

Joining Brooks and Brantley in the team scoring for the host school Walters State were Blake Woody who is in a tie for 17th with a 78, Ashton Pratt's 79 ties him for 22nd place and Ian Kinsey carded an 81 to tie for 27th. Jonas Rayfield (80, T-26th) and Jack Leach (82, T-31st) played as individuals for the Senators and Nick Talley's score of 84 places him in 39th place.

 

The second and final round of the Walters State Fall Classic gets underway at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
