No. 9-ranked Walters State takes two on final day of Stinger Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. — No. 9 Walters State finished off the Stinger Invitational in style, sweeping East Georgia 12-0 in five innings and Florence-Darlington 6-3 in six innings.

 

With the wins, the Senators improve to 7-4 on the season and 3-1 in the Stinger Invitational.

 

It was a complete effort from Walters State in game one with Caleb McNeely and Jerry Hammons each having two doubles and both knocking in a run. Bryce Hodge had three RBIs.

 

The Senators were patient in their approach, drawing seven walks. Walters State scored two in the first, three in the second and fourth and four in the fifth.

 

Dillon Phillips (2-0) was tabbed for the start for the Senators, throwing a complete game shutout. Phillips gave up just two hits and struck out 11. Phillips has 19 strikeouts already on the year.

 

As in game one, McNeely led the charge again against Florence-Darlington with two hits. Seth Gardner had two RBIs as part of a six-run first inning for the Senators. Hodge had a double to get the scoring started, part of the team's five total hits in the frame.

 

Along with Gardner, Hodge, Max Riemer, Michael Robinson and Parker Stinnett each knocked in runs.

 

Ben Joyce (2-0) started game two on the mound for the Senators, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on three hits and struck out 10. Jared Culp came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs.

 

Game two was called after six innings due to darkness.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to take on Milligan College JV. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
