GALLATIN, TN – Taz Butler and Karson Bonaparte combined to throw 6.2 scoreless innings in relief on Wednesday evening against Dyersburg State as Walters State held on for a 6-4 victory in the Region 7/TCCAA Tournament.

With the win, the Senators improved to 50-8 on the season.

Butler (2-0) collected the win in the game, entering with one out in the third inning and throwing three scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out four.

Then, with one out in the sixth, Bonaparte replaced Butler and threw the remaining 3.2 innings. He allowed three hits and struck out four. It was his third save of the season.

Brayden Matthews got the start on the mound for the Senators and threw 2.1 innings. He allowed four runs on two hits and struck out five.

At the plate, Walters State was patient as they drew nine walks. Caleb Marmo drew three walks and scored two runs while Keaton Ray walked twice and scored a run. RBIs came from Kurtis Reid, Cooper Torres, who also scored twice, Corbin Shaw and Deniel Ortiz.

It was a wild start to the game as Matthews hit two and walked two in the top of the first but struck out the side to limit the damage to just one run. In the bottom half of the inning, the Senators took the lead as Marmo scored on an error and a fielder's choice by Ortiz scored Torres to make it 2-1.

The Senators added to their lead in the second as Ray scored on a passed ball, but Dyersburg scored three in the third to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

Needing a rally, Walters State got it in the fourth with two runs to take the lead. After two strikeouts started the inning, Marmo singled. Torres was up next and delivered with an RBI double to tie the game. Cole McCallum was next up and hit a ball to second that was booted, allowing Torres to score to give Walters State a 5-4 lead.

In the fifth, Walters State added one more run as Ortiz walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Ray walked to put runners on the corners, Kurtis Reid laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line that he beat out for a single. The bunt scored Ortiz as well to make it 6-4.

From there, Bonaparte led the way as he left two on in eighth and two on in the ninth.
